SAD Bar Presents: Red Thread By Sonia Kwek and Ila

When prancing nude in your own home puts you at risk of a fine or some jail time, and with the impending criminalisation of cyber flashing (e.g. the sending of unsolicited “dick pics”), visual artist ila and performance-maker Sonia Kwek think it's about time we reconsider the concept of nude bodies as displays of public indecency or even societal nuisances.

Nudity isn't just about the flashing of genitalia, and being in a state of nakedness shouldn't always carry sexual connotations. Red Thread is a site-specific installation and exhibition that invites you to break away from the discomfort and shame of your nudity by reclaiming the parts of your body that are unique to you—in a public space.

Your moles, scars, and stretch marks carry stories of traumas and triumphs. We invite you to enter the Red Thread photo booth, undress and photograph yourself, then share with us a personal story about your body. We urge you to feel empowered by this act of protesting against the social stigmas that have been imposed on your nude body, for it is not a burden that you need to carry or cover up.

Act 1: Photo Booth
29 November to 15 December, 1pm – 7pm
Armenian Street

The first part of Red Thread consists of a pop-up photo booth, which will be set up on Armenian Street for a period of two weeks. Members of the public are invited to photograph a part of their body and/or write about a body part/body memory that they would not publicly reveal. The photographs and stories will form Act 2, the Exhibition.

The photo booth will be unveiled on 28 November, 7pm–9.30pm.

Act 2: Exhibition
13 to 15 December, 12pm – 6pm

The photographs and stories collected from the photo booth will be showcased in an exhibition alongside existing photographs from a public intervention series conducted by the artists in 2018. They will be hung from red threads in The Substation SAD Bar.

Act 3: Sharing Circle
13 and 14 December, 8pm - 10pm

As part of the exhibition, the artists will be facilitating a sharing circle on two nights. The artists hope to create a communal space where body narratives are both owned and released by everyone in attendance. You are encouraged to come with an open mind. Come ready to listen and also to share stories of your own.

Red Thread is supported by the SAD Bar Open Call as part of The Substation's 2019 programme, A Public Square.
